Permit Drawings Checklist for Contractors and Owner-Builders

Permit drawings are the documents your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) reviews before issuing a building permit. Missing sheets or unclear notes are among the most common reasons for plan check comments and resubmittals.

Start with a complete site context: property lines, setbacks, existing structures, and proposed work. Even for interior remodels, many jurisdictions want a clear scope statement and floor plans showing what changes.

Floor plans should be dimensioned, labeled by room, and show door/window tags where required. Elevations communicate height, materials, and openings. Sections help reviewers understand assemblies and vertical relationships.

Include schedules and notes: door and window schedules, general notes, code references your designer used, and any life-safety notes the AHJ typically expects. Requirements vary by city and county—always confirm local submittal checklists.

Coordinate structural and MEP information when those systems are part of the permit. Incomplete coordination is a frequent cause of deferred approvals and field conflicts.
